Clinchfield Railroad Scholars and Authors
Here are the noted individuals who have chronicled and preserved the history of the Clinchfield Railroad and the East Tennessee, Southwest Virginia and Western North Carolina Region and its Railroads.
Without their passion and dedication, much of our collective knowledge of the railroads and the region would not exist.
Noted Individuals
James A Goforth, Clinchfield Veteran for 30+ years, Clinchfield Chief Engineer, Historian for Clinchfield and for Erwin, Author, Engineer for City of Johnson City.
Ron Flanary: Well-known railroad industry Expert and Historian, Author of books and many magazine articles, and exemplary photographer.
Robert L. Harvey: Clinchfield and N&W Historian, Coal Railroad Historian, Author, Kingsport Resident for decades and worked at Tennessee Eastman for many years.
Robert A. Helm: Clinchfield Historian, Author, Video Producer, Model Railroader (O gauge & HO), and Doctor of Optometry
Scott Jessee: 36 Year Veteran of the Clinchfield and CSX Railroads, Railroad Expert, Historian, Frequent Contributor to the Jitterbug magazine.
Steve King: Worked in both the railroad and airline industries. Author of Clinchfield Country.
C.K. Marsh, Jr: Clinchfield, CC&C, and Kingsport Historian, Author, Retired Executive in the Transportation and Chemical Industry, Kingsport Civic Leader
Ray Poteat: 40-year+ Clinchfield Veteran, Author, President of the CC&O Historical Society, and Jitterbug Editor. Many in his family are life-long Clinchfield veterans.
Calvin Sneed: A noted bridge and tunnel expert who has authored two books on bridges across America. As a vocation, Calvin spent 50+ years as television reporter and anchor. He is now retired and devoting full time to bridge hunting.
Mark A. Stevens: A newspaper editor and publisher, including leading the Clinchfield’s hometown newspaper, the Erwin Record. He and A. J. ‘Alf’ Peoples have written and published two books on Clinchfield’s fabled No. 1 steam engine.
