The CSX Blue Ridge Subdivision, the old Clinchfield line south of Erwin is now reopen after the extensive damage from Hurricane Helene. Dante Virginia
Dante (rhymes with pant) was the coal operations center for the Clinchfield Railroad throughout its existence, and continued to be a key yard for the rail line well into the CSX era. It was also the headquarters for the Clinchfield Coal company in the 1900s which owned hundreds of thousands of acres of land in that region. From the early 1900s through the 1940s, the mines in and around Dante thrived. But after World War II the coal in the Dante valleys was depleted, thus new mines were dug in adjacent areas and towns of southwest Virginia and eastern Kentucky.
